Myspace, ah, the Good ‘Ol Days
Back in 2011, I had the surreal experience of meeting one of my musical heroes. It all started with a singing competition on Myspace. Now, for those unfamiliar, Myspace was the social media battleground of its time – think Instagram or Facebook but with a lot more drama. Remember the days of showcasing your top 8 friends? Ah, good times!
Diving into the Competition
So, there I was, scrolling through Myspace, when I stumbled upon a singing competition. The challenge? Record a Christina Aguilera song and hope for the best. Thousands entered, but I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”
The Imperfect Take
I locked myself in the bathroom and recorded one of my favorite Xtina songs, “Beautiful.” The sound was pretty distorted since I didn’t have a recording microphone, and I was majorly critical of how imperfect it was (from my pitch, to the riffs, and to the way I looked). I did it in one take and decided to just send it off and forget about it since I had no chance of winning, and I didn’t think anyone would ever really see it.
Surprise, Surprise!
Fast forward a month, and what do I find in my inbox? A notification declaring me the winner! I certainly didn’t see that one coming! I had scored the grand prize: a trip for 2 to LA to watch the taping of “The Voice” and meet Christina herself – EEK! I was so excited!
The Lesson Learned
So, what’s the takeaway from this whirlwind experience? Simple: don’t let doubt hold you back. Embrace imperfection, because sometimes, those imperfect performances are what might be adding character to your singing and can sometimes be the most memorable. So, drop the expectations, believe in yourself, and just sing your heart out. You never know where it might take you.
