Hey singers! Welcome to a deep dive into one of my favorite topics: using body movement to unlock a freer, more resonant voice. If you’ve ever felt like your singing is a bit stuck or like you’re not quite getting that full sound, this might be the missing piece you’ve been looking for.

The Story Behind the Movement

I first discovered the magic of body movement through my incredible mentor, Chris Johnson, a renowned vocal coach known for his holistic and science-based approach. Hearing how he used movement to unlock vocal freedom was a true lightbulb moment for me. After training with him, I began integrating these techniques into my own coaching, and they’ve been truly transformative—not just for my students, but for my own voice as well.

A Simple Technique to Try: Arms Up!

Let’s dive into a simple technique you can try right now: the “arms up” method.

  1. First, sing a few lines of a song just as you normally would. Pay attention to how it feels and give it a rating from 1 to 10—how free or easy does your voice feel?
  2. Now raise your arms up over your head and sing the same lines again. Notice if it feels easier, if your breath feels more controlled, or if your posture changes. Give it another rating and see if there’s a difference.

If this little tweak improves your singing, try practicing with it for a few minutes each day. Over time, you can start to take the movement away and see how your body naturally remembers that freedom.
